Three Cool Clucks
Oil on Canvas, 36” x 48”, framed 48" x
60"
These were our chickens -- rooster Gandalf (we were reading the
Lord of the Rings trilogy at the time) and hens Honeydew and
Mango. We raised them from chicks and wanted them for their
eggs. But they, of course, became family pets. When it came
time to paint them, I had to paint their personalities, not
their actual beautiful brown plumage. Gandalf was the
flamboyant macho man, Honeydew was demure, and Mango was strong
and could hold her own. The slanted board they loved to stand
on became a glowing pathway and the forest they looked out to
became a tangle of green-blue brushstrokes, with some reds
thrown in for balance. This painting was selected to appear in
Colorline-USA’s 2005 calendar.
